Ghost vs Spirit - they are not the same thing

People use the words ghost and spirit interchangeably all the time. I get it — they both fall under the big spooky umbrella and Hollywood hasn't exactly helped clear things up. But as someone who has encountered both, I can tell you they are very different things, and understanding the difference actually matters.

So let's sort this out once and for all.

A ghost is residual energy.

Think of it like a recording. When someone lives in a place, experiences strong emotion there, or passes in a particular way, they can leave an energetic imprint behind. That imprint replays — sometimes over and over — like a loop. It has no awareness of you. It is not trying to communicate. It is not your nanna popping in to say hello. It is simply energy, doing its thing, completely oblivious to the fact that you are standing there in your pjs absolutely losing your mind.

I see these with my physical eyes. They appear as ghostly apparitions — a shape, a figure, or movement out of the corner of my eye. But here is the thing — there is nobody home. No consciousness. No soul. Just an energy blueprint of someone who once existed in that space. It is the spiritual equivalent of a footprint in the sand. The person has long moved on. The impression just stayed behind.

A spirit is a whole other story.

A spirit has consciousness. It is an aware, evolved soul that exists beyond the physical world and can choose to connect, communicate and make its presence known. When your loved one comes through in a reading, that is spirit. When you feel someone sit on the end of your bed, or catch a familiar smell out of nowhere, or find a coin in a ridiculous place for the third time this week — that is spirit. Intentional. Aware. Present.

Spirits communicate. They have personality, humour, opinions and occasionally terrible taste in timing. Ghosts just wander around doing their energetic replay with zero interest in you whatsoever.

So why does it matter?

Because if you think every strange thing you experience in your house is a trapped, suffering soul — you are going to stress yourself out unnecessarily. A lot of what people experience is simply residual energy. The house has history. The energy is old. Nobody is suffering and nobody needs rescuing.

Now, if you ARE experiencing something that feels conscious — something that responds, moves things, makes itself known in a way that feels deliberate — that is worth paying attention to. That is a different conversation entirely.

But the shadowy figure you keep seeing in the hallway? Nine times out of ten, that is just an old energetic echo. Give it a nod and carry on
